MICR Check Printing Explained: What It Is and Why It Matters

What Is MICR?

MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition. It is the technology that allows banks to automatically read and process checks at high speed. The row of numbers and symbols along the bottom edge of every check — your routing number, account number, and check number — is printed in a specific font called MICR E-13B, readable both by humans and automated banking equipment.

The standard was introduced in the 1950s by the American Bankers Association and has underpinned check processing in the U.S. ever since. Even as digital payments have grown, billions of checks are still processed through MICR systems every year.

What's on the MICR Line?

Reading left to right along the bottom of a check:

  1. Routing Number — the 9-digit number identifying your bank, surrounded by special transit symbols (⑆).
  2. Account Number — your checking account number, followed by an "on-us symbol" (⑈).
  3. Check Number — the sequential number of the check for tracking and reconciliation.

The MICR E-13B Font

MICR characters use a specially designed font where each character has an exaggerated shape to prevent confusion even if ink smudges slightly. Good check printing software includes the E-13B font built-in and applies it automatically — you never have to install or select it manually.

Do You Need Special MICR Ink?

💡 Practical Advice: For most individuals and small businesses, regular laser toner produces excellent results. MICR-specific supplies are an optional upgrade for heavy business use.

Why Positioning Matters

The MICR line must fall within a precise zone at the bottom of the check. Industry standards specify exact tolerances for character height, distance from the bottom edge, and character spacing. If it prints even slightly off, automated scanners may misread it, causing processing delays.

This is why check printing software matters — CheckPrintPro positions the MICR line correctly on every check automatically.

Common MICR Errors and How to Avoid Them

Error Cause Prevention
MICR line too high Wrong margin settings Use check printing software with locked positioning
Wrong routing number Manual entry error Verify routing number on your bank's official website
Smeared MICR Inkjet not fully dry Wait 60 seconds before handling the printed check
Wrong font Standard font used instead of E-13B Use dedicated check printing software
